America’s Clean Energy, Good Jobs Future
Apollo’s unique role in the national energy debate is to speak directly to the economic benefits of moving swiftly and decisively toward a clean energy future. This fall, the Apollo Alliance released The New Apollo Program, a comprehensive strategy to accelerate the development of the nation’s vast clean energy resources and move us toward energy security, climate stability, and economic prosperity.
To move this agenda forward, we’re inviting our key supporters to participate in a monthly National Conversation. This unique series of conference calls features national figures and addresses substantive aspects of The New Apollo Program. Our focus is on seizing the opportunity to catalyze a clean energy revolution in America that launches a new generation of good jobs and broadly shared economic opportunity.

Phil Angelides, chairman of the Apollo Alliance and the Canyon-Johnson Urban Fund, leads the 45-minute monthly conversations, which end in November 2009. Following brief presentations by guest speakers will be a lively and informative discussion. The first National Conversation guest speaker in August was Colorado Governor Bill Ritter, who outlined his state’s ambitious New Energy Economy program.

Made in America - Clean Energy Manufacturing
Invited Speakers:
U.S Senator Debbie Stabenow, Democrat of Michigan
Bob Baugh, Executive Director of the AFL-CIO Industrial Council
Since 1992, the US has lost 7.2 million manufacturing jobs. Domestic and global demand for solar, wind, and related renewable energy and efficiency technologies is an opportunity for US manufacturers to supply the gears, bearings, concrete, steel, glass, motors, and other components needed to build the emerging clean energy economy. Apollo’s Domestic Clean Energy Manufacturing initiative proposes federal grants to U.S. companies that manufacture renewable and efficiency products, use 85 percent American-made components parts, and are assembled here at home. Our speakers will discuss how this Made in America initiative can create and retain well-paid jobs here at home, reinvigorate the economy, and stabilize America’s middle class.

Rebuilding American Cities Clean and Green
Invited Speaker:
Mayor Cory A. Booker, Newark, New Jersey
In September 2008, Newark Mayor Cory Booker and the Apollo Alliance held Newark’s Green Future Summit, a two-day conference devoted to helping Newark transform itself into a national showcase of how to solve poverty and joblessness, respond to serious public health concerns, and engage new business activity around energy-efficient, resource-conserving, and pollution-reducing tools, equipment, and practices. In February’s National Conversation, Mayor Booker will discuss challenges and opportunities presented by the clean energy economy in one of America’s rising cities.
