April 7, 2009: Airlines Aniticpate Carbon Caps, Back Emissions Plan

In anticipation of global CO2 emissions caps in the near future, four major airlines - Air France/KLM, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Virgin Atlantic - are supporting an emissions cap plan.

Last week the labor department reported that unemployment climbed to 8.5 percent. When the calculations include the underemployed and those who have stopped looking for work, the number rises to over 15 percent.

The first of four federal hearings on offshore oil drilling, windpower, and other potential energy sources off of the Atlantic Coast was held in Atlantic City yesterday.

Energy was the featured topic last week over at Newstrust, a site that culls the ‘best’ articles.  Energy topics ranged from offshore oil drilling to the feasibility of ‘green’ transmission lines.

Several large corporations contributed money to small-scale wind turbine producer Southwest Windpower.

Robert Redford, a former Apollo Alliance board member, calls on the clean energy advocates and land preservationists to compromise in order move America off of fossil fuels.

Local Green: The Philadelphia Inquirer interviewed Kathleen McGinty about her home state’s green economy prospects.  McGinty is the former Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection head, the former chairwoman of the White House Council on Environmental Quality, and an Apollo Alliance board member.

From Hawaii to New Jersey, states across the country are considering legislation that would require new home developers to offer solar electricity and hot water systems.

North Carolina approved a plan to help homeowners pay for energy efficient furnaces and water heaters, and more state clean energy incentive programs are likely on the way.

Virginia United Green is hosting a green symposium on April 25th in Hampton.
