Food for thought on the green jobs debate
Marc Gunther, formerly of Fortune and a frequent contributor to CNN Money, sparked a bit of a debate on the net last week w/ a piece he wrote for GreenBiz.com (The Phony Green Jobs Debate, April 15) in which he argued that claims by environmental groups that climate regulation would create a wave of new green jobs were vastly overblown.
After getting his comeuppance from the likes of NRDC, David Yarnold of EDF, and PERI’s Bob Pollin, he wrote a new column that exhibited slightly more evolved thinking (Second Thoughts on Green Jobs (and Economists), April 20).
There’s still some healthy skepticism in there, which is precisely what make this interesting. It shows some of the messaging challenges and pitfalls we face when trying to frame the green jobs issue — even with people who strongly believe that climate change is real and that we must act now to deal with it.
By the way, note the “Make it in America” GreenMAP graphic half way down the page with a link to a GreenBiz story on the Apollo GreenMAP.
