Richmond, CA Continues Down The Green-Collar Job Path

Last week, Richmond, CA’s city council unanimously passed a “ground-breaking” pilot program that will require customers to use locally trained labor the solar thermal rebate program.  The initial rebate is $1,000 per system for 25 rooftops.

Solar Richmond, Richmond BUILD, Grid Alternatives and Solar Living Institute will partner in a training program for Richmond residents.

Richmond BUILD offers a 12-week program that includes 7 weeks of pre-apprenticeship construction training and 5 weeks of solar instruction. Heliodyne, a local solar thermal company, is working with the partnership to add solar thermal training to the curriculum.  Solar thermal systems harnesses the power of the sun to heat water.

According to the city, this is the country’s first program that offers a thermal rebate that is tied to a job training program.
